How To Unclog Your Kitchen Sink In 5 Easy Steps

Drain Unblocker #1 - GARBAGE DISPOSAL FIX

Follow the instructions in the manual if your garbage disposal is blocked. These steps can be used if the blockage persists.

  1. Turn off the garbage disposal's power switch.

  2. Use pliers to remove any stuck objects.

  3. To move the garbage disposal blades from one side to another, if no object is found, you can use a long wooden spoon or dowel.

  4. Wait around 15 minutes after removing an object, or being able move the blades, for the disposal motor's cooling to take place.

  5. After turning the power off, push the reset button.

Drain Unblocker #2: BENT-HANGER TRICK

  1. If you have a double bowl kitchen sink, this could be your magical spell.

  2. Take a coat hanger wire, bend it on one end and make a small hook that fits through the basket strainer.

  3. The bent hanger hook should be pushed first into the drain.

  4. Once you feel the clog, twist the wire and pull it until you get it out.

  5. You can try the steps 2 and 3. Continue reading for more solutions if this fails.

Drain Unblocker #3 - PLUNGE, PUMP, AND PUPP

Here are some tips on how to use a plunger or sink pump to clear clogged drains

  1. Clear the drain area, making sure that it is clear.

  2. If you have a dishwasher, make sure to attach the drain hose first. You can fill the sink with water up to 8cm to 10. Use a wet cloth to seal the drain opening.

  3. For several times, plunge the sink pump vigorously into the drain to force water (rather that air) into it. You should cover the entire drain.

  4. For sudden additional pressure, remove the plunger from the drain at the last pump.

  5. Repeat the above steps if the water is not flowing down or moving slowly. Continue to the next steps if the water does not drain after several attempts.

Drain Unblocker #4 - STUFF A SINK SNAKE

This is how you can use a plumber snake or drain auger.

  1. Turn off the auger and let it run down the drain.

  2. If you feel resistance to moving the coil, pull it up and down until it is gone.

  3. Take out the drain auger.

  4. To check if your drain is clear, turn on the tap.

  5. Re-try steps 1 through 4.

  6. Once the blockage is gone, remove the snake from the tub and rinse it off with warm water. Finally, wipe the area with a clean rag.

Drain Unblocker #5 - CLEAN UP P-TRAP

  1. Clear the area below the sink and place the bucket directly under the P-trap.

  2. Use rubber or plastic gloves.

  3. Turn off the slip nuts to release the trap. Use pliers if the nuts are difficult to loosen.

  4. The curved part of the P-trap should be removed. Any water that flows should be caught in your bucket.

  5. Clean the trap thoroughly with a straightened coat hanger wire or a large bottle brush.

  6. Check that the washers remain soft and supple after you have finished cleaning. You may need to replace the washers if they are not soft and supple.

  7. If the trap is clear and there are no clogs, you can insert a small drain snake in the pipe. Use a clockwise twisting motion to move the snake in and outside.

  8. Take out the snake.

  9. Assemble the P-trap. Be careful not to tighten the connections.
